The people here go mad. They blame the wind.
During the years 2012–14, I have been composing pieces inspired by bells and music-box mechanisms. Today my research has shifted in another direction, but before moving on I decided to close completely this compositional cycle — which includes the pieces Clangs, D’après and Glockengießerei — with one last work. I was walking alone through Somerville (a suburb of Boston), on a sunny, quiet day. The wind blew strongly for just a moment, and when it stopped, it left in the air a clanging harmony. It took me a few seconds to understand that this sound was made by metal chimes hanging from several doors. It made me smile! After a few months, when I was starting to compose this piece, I was reading a poem by Dorothy Molloy. She kept repeating “The people here go mad. They blame the wind.” and it made me remember that day, that sound. So I decided to write it down. [C.I.]
Clara Iannotta
Clara Iannotta ist eine italienische Komponistin und Kuratorin. Ihre Werke wurden von bekannten Ensembles, Solist_innen und Orchestern beauftragt und aufgeführt, darunter: Arditti Quartett, Quatuor Diotima, Ensemble intercontemporain, JACK Quartet, Klangforum Wien, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Münchener Kammerorchester, Ensemble Nikel, WDR Sinfonieorchester, RSO Wien, SWR Symphonieorchester. Iannotta war 2013 Stipendiatin des Berliner Künstlerprogramms des DAAD, von 2018 bis 2019 Stipendiatin der Villa Médicis (Académie de France à Rome) und erhielt zahlreiche Preise, darunter: Ernst von Siemens Komponist_innen-Förderpreis 2018, Hindemith-Preis 2018, Una vita nella musica – Giovani 2019, Premio Abbiati 2021. Ihre drei Porträtalben A Failed Entertainment (Edition RZ), Earthing (Wergo) und Moult (Kairos) wurden mit Plätzen auf der Bestenliste der deutschen Schallplattenkritik ausgezeichnet. Sie ist Mitglied der Akademie der Künste Berlin. Seit 2014 ist sie außerdem künstlerische Leiterin der Bludenzer Tage zeitgemäßer Musik. Ihre Musik erscheint bei Edition Peters.
